Mathias Haus studied classi-cal percussion in Duesseldorf, than followed an invitation of Gary Burton to study jazzvibes with him in Boston. Aside from that he studied composition /ar-rangement with Herb Pomeroy, Hal Crook and John LaPorta from 1985-88, graduating magna cum laude.
As a vibesplayer festivals (Montreux jazzfestival, Hot Jazz Meeting, Oleg Kagan Festival (musical director: Natalia Gutman; representative: Claudio Abbado) and regurlar performances on radio (television). His own Bands and Duets (with NDR Pianist Vadislav Sendecki) played numerous concerts in Europe, the U.S. and Australia. He was featured soloist of the WDR radio Bigband as well as performer for all german Radio-Bigbands, accomponing soloists Martial Solal, Susi Hyldgaard, Nils Landgren, Enrique Telleria, Sammy Nestico and others.
He works as a composer include ordered pieces (Festivals, Bote&Bock, the WDR radio station and others) and a cataloque of solos, duets, trios, quartets, quintets, classical ensembles, percussion ensembles, bigband and orchestral pieces, Film scores and music for theatre. In 2001, german concert promoter Rene Heinersdorff paid tribute to Mathias Haus compositions in a 5 show concert series.
As a classical player Haus played under Stockhausen, Kagel and Henze. Stations are the Berlin Filmfestival, the “alte Oper Frankfurt”, Tschai- kowsky-hall in Moscow and Bruxelles, Amsterdam, Boston or the Cologne Philharmonic. Mathias Haus played a.o. with Thomas Alkier, Jim Black, Rainer Brueninghaus, Hal Crook, Wolfgang Engstfeld, Xaver Fischer, Christian Jacob, Paul Kuhn, Donny McCaslin, Sammy Nestico, Stefan Rademacher, Hugo Read, Vadislav Sendetzki, Bobby Shue, Luci-ana Souza, Fred Sturm, Skuli Sverisson, Reiner Witzel, Ken Wollesen…Mathias Haus received the Pottprice 2002, a german jazzaward pre-sented annually. Other artists to recieve it were Uri Caine, Julia Hüls-mann, Claudio Puntin, Paul Kuhn, Peter Weniger, Dieter Illg and the Muthspiel-brothers.
In the near past Haus performed Carla Bley‘s ¾ at the Essen Phil-harmonic with Carla Bley, Steve Swallow and Uri Caine, and Steffen Schorns “Tiefenträume” at the WDR Jazzfest 2014 with the Norwe-gian Wind Ensemble.
Mathias Haus is a teacher at the cologne college (since 1992) and a regular clinician.
